One of Jens Quistgaard’s best known designs for Dansk was the “iron spider candlestick” which oddly was nicknamed the “million dollar candlestick”. It was not until I met one of the graphic designers who worked for Dansk that I learned how it got that nickname. There were a million of those small black iron pieces made and Quistgaard got a design fee of one dollar for each one. Hard to believe but it turned out to be true.
My wife and I visited Quistgaard on his farm outside Vordingborg in South Zealand, Denmark in 2004. He proudly showed us all around. In the living room, hanging on the wall, was a single iron spider candle stick. I asked Quistgaard, why he had a candlestick on his wall, and he told me, a very satisfied smile on his face, that it was to remind him that it was that small candlestick that allowed him to renovate his whole farm.
