PIET HEIN (1905 - 96)Piet Hein was a physicist who created new geometical forms called the super-ellipse and the soma cube. He was also a poet who wrote under the name "Kumbel". In the 1950s and 60s, he designed furniture, ceramics, silver hollowware and other home furnishings all of which have clean lines and smooth undecorated surfaces. They formed part of the style known as "Scandinavian Modern". Some of his designs incorporated the geometric forms he created. For example, he created a tray for Georg Jensen in 1966 in the form of a super ellipse and a container in the form of a super egg. From GEORG JENSEN HOLLOWWARE, THE SILVERFUND COLLECTION, David A.
